Angry Video Game Nerd: Castlevania Part IV

Part IV of The Angry Video Game Nerd’s Castlevania series of rant videos covers Bloodlines and mainstream darling Symphony of the Night. Personally, I had a hard time getting into Symphony at first, and had to go back to it years later to really get why people liked it so much. Bloodlines, however, had me from go.

  • “To start you off with the good weapons, and then take them away, is just fucking teasing you.” No, it’s Metroid.
  • No use for the backward dash? It’s great for stick-and-move when you’re fighting an enemy that takes more than one hit. Also, you can use it in the very beginning of the game to avoid the conversation with Death entirely, and keep your super weapons.
  • “You have to go through the whole castle over again, upside down.” No you don’t, if you don’t care to bother with the best ending. You can just defeat Richter and the game ends that way.
  • “Since when did all the games have to take place inside the Castle? Since Symphony of the Night.” What about Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia?
  • “The only way to beat it (Super Castlevania IV) is to beat it with your mind and reflexes, and that to me is what Castlevania is all about.” This is fascinating to me, and it’s food for thought. Does Adventure Rebirth bring this back?
  • The grayscale ending sequence starting at around 8:30 is very nice. I love that ending music to Castlevania IV.
