ScrewAttack’s Angry Video Game Nerd talks some more Castlevania

His arguments against Simon’s Quest are SPOT ON. This is why my review of the game was so low when it hit Virtual Console. It just doesn’t hold up. However, I don’t agree that the game is so hard. I blasted through it easily in a couple of hours, relying entirely on my memory of playing it some twenty years ago. Of course, if I were new to the game, I’d be all over the guides at GameFAQs or something.

As to the dialog in the game, I’ve often wondered if the original Japanese text made sense, and poor localization broke all the hints the townspeople offered. For example, someone you’ll see in the video tells you the man on the boat likes garlic, while there’s a cloaked man who looks just like him in the graveyard who appears when you drop garlic. See what I mean? It seems like someone just translated the tips completely wrong.

He’s also right about Dracula’s Curse being really, really hard. I laughed out loud at, “see, I can cheat too, you rotten bastard.”

Here’s a suggestion for Angry: In the Dracula battle, he’s standing too close to Dracula. If he’s walking away while the pillars come up, he will have more room between them to maneuver. They’ll rise further apart. Then he’ll have room to dodge that flame pillar that comes up in the middle.

  • So will this be available on the DS? (Yeah I could Google but you wanted comments, lol.)

    • Great question, thanks. :> Actually, it would be great if they produced an enhanced port of the Castlevania NES trilogy for DS. Even better would be the three NES games, two SNES games, the Genesis game, and perhaps even the PCEngine game on one game card.
