Ready saltshakers, people! The newest Retronauts Podcast, number 68, in the context of a discussion about Konami shifting development of many of their IPs over to western dev teams (they’re talking about the new Vandal Hearts game), features an interesting joke by host Jeremy Parish. Parish sarcastically points out that the Castlevania first person shooter will be great.
I’m laying two things against each other here, now. On one hand, this was pretty obviously a joke about how western teams tend do develop western-styled games. On the other hand was the pretty blatant reveal of Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles for PSP in an earlier episode of this same podcast before the game had been actually shown. That one was done a little differently, in a “wouldn’t it be great if…?” kind of way, and it was obvious that at least several of the other guys on the show knew exactly what he was talking about. So this one’s not as straightforward, but let’s think about it for a minute. What do we think of the idea of a first person Castlevania?
It wouldn’t be exactly a shooter of course as missile weapons don’t tend to be standard in the series (though maybe they could be this time), but a first person action game might work very well. I’d like to see how it would work. Perhaps something more like Resident Evil 4 would be a better idea, where it’s an over-the-shoulder view. We’ll have to stay tuned, because 1up did a good job with the Dracula X Chronicles reveal. I watched that direct-feed video like a dozen times.
Oh, and the new podcast format is great. I was apprehensive when Parish was explaining it in the intro, but it’s really much better than I expected. It works a lot like Blizzcast, which is a good thing.
