Amazon’s long-running deal of offering $20 in store credit for preordering some of the most popular games is one of my favorites. I used this for Metroid Other M, and I find myself tempted to use it to grab Lords of Shadow, even though I’m expecting a review copy from the publisher. As a collector of these games, I’m going to have to eventually grab every version.

This is all but guaranteed to be the cheapest way to grab a copy at launch, so get your order in in before it comes out.

IGN’s David Clayman played the first eight hours of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and was impressed with the game’s scope, something I didn’t really expect. I mean, Cox told us maybe 12 hours, didn’t he? Check out these three significant sections of the preview, and let me know if this doesn’t give you some really positive feelings about Lords of Shadow.

Lords of Shadow is not a game you’re going to plow through in a single sitting. On the map screen there are 12 chapters, each with multiple stages and some seriously long boss battles. After playing for nearly eight hours, I was slashing my way through Chapter 3. The story, as told through detailed in-game cutscenes, seemed to be just getting started.

In my time with the game I was able to mount and ride a Spider, Warg, Warthog, and a Troll. There’s even a sequence where Gabriel does battle from the back of a dashing horse, trading blows with attacking Werg riders. Each has their own special abilities that include smashing through barriers, creating bridges, and climbing walls.

The environments I played were lush, detailed, and mostly outdoors. They were detailed down to wildlife like birds and frogs that scatter in Gabriel’s path. In the first three chapters players travel through swamps, jungles, ancient ruins, and snow fields. There were scenes of raking sunlight and classic ruins; beautiful scenery for brutal combat.

1up interviewed Dave Cox at Gamescom and came out with some key information for those of us who are buying. He confirmed that there will, indeed, be two DLC packs as we had previously heard. They will feature new areas and enemies, and will not add an ending to the game, which seems to imply that [...]]]>

1up interviewed Dave Cox at Gamescom and came out with some key information for those of us who are buying. He confirmed that there will, indeed, be two DLC packs as we had previously heard. They will feature new areas and enemies, and will not add an ending to the game, which seems to imply that they may be more along the lines of sidequests. There are also two versions of the Collector’s Edition for Lords of Shadow. The North American version has the soundtrack and an artbook, and the European version has a mask instead of the art book. Looks like I’ll have to email a friend on the other side of the pond about this matter and see what can be done.

The rest of the information relates to the actual development of the game, how Kojima and Igarashi tie in, things along those lines. It’s a good read if you’re following this game, so check it out.

I also chuckled at the fact that they couldn’t get the game working online, either. I’d love to see some stats to know what percentage of people with this game are able to play it online.
